How outbreaks are tracked

Hantavirus.app aggregates data from official public health sources in near real-time:

WHO Disease Outbreak News — global alerts and situation reports
CDC — US case surveillance and epidemiological updates
PAHO — regional updates for the Americas
ProMED — early warning reports from clinicians worldwide
AISStream — maritime vessel tracking for shipboard outbreaks

Understanding the data

Confirmed cases: Laboratory-verified by IgM serology, RT-PCR, or equivalent
Suspected cases: Clinically compatible illness with exposure history, awaiting lab confirmation
Active: Outbreak is ongoing with new cases in the last 30 days
Contained: No new cases for ≥2 incubation periods (≥16 weeks)
CFR: Case fatality ratio = deaths / confirmed cases × 100
